Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month, Short Film “La Serenata” Tells Story About a Boy Who Wants to Sing to Another Boy
Latinx Creators of the Award-winning Film Release it on YouTube for the First Time
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 20, 2022) — West coast screenwriting duo, Adelina Anthony and Ernesto Javier Martínez, have released their award-winning short film, “La Serenata,” on YouTube, just in time for Latinx Heritage Month. A winner of 9 best film awards, including the HBO Latinx Short Film Competition and the Imagen Award (commonly known as the “Latin Golden Globes”), La Serenata follows two parents who struggle with their Mexican musical tradition when their son requests to learn a love song for another boy. Produced by AdeRisa Productions and Rebozo Boy Productions, and previously available only to HBO Max subscribers, this film is now free online and promises to earn the trust, tears and laughter of a new multi-generational viewership.
This trailblazing project was inspired by an award-winning children’s book, also written by Martínez, entitled Cuando Amamos Cantamos/ When We Love Someone We Sing to Them (Reflection Press, 2018). It is the first bilingual children’s book published in North America about a boy who loves a boy. Illustrated by the award-winning artist and children’s book author Maya Gonzalez, the book crafts a visually stunning story about the Mexican serenata tradition, and why demonstrating romantic affection proudly, publicly, and through song is such a valued custom.
Encouraged by the success of the book and short film, Martínez and Anthony are working on developing the feature film version of La Serenata. This year they were named semifinalists for the Diverse Voices Screenwriting Lab and were selected by the National Association for Latino Independent Producer (NALIP) as 2022 Latino Media Fellows.
